Sports Science week begins
Mon 23 May 2016Today we began an amazing week of science and sport.
We have a huge range of activities going on this week and children are being encouraged to put on their special glasses and look for the science in everything they do!
Mr Mace started the week off in assembly for Years 2-6 and introduced todays Kung Fu specialists.
All Years 2-6 will all have enjoyed a fun workshop this morning. The Year 1 children have been learning Karate with Miss O'Connor too.
They are all looking for science relating to their bodies, muscles and breathing as well as the different forces they are using when competing.
Watch out for a letter coming home tonight giving more information and with news of a competition.....

The children have been working on a topic about The Future. Each class decided on their own focus based on the main theme. Eco Action - Saving Water!
Wed 27 Apr 2016On Wednesday 27th April we had some visitors from Thames Water who came to work with our KS2 children.
They come from a project called Eco Action which looks at ways that we can all save water. Children learnt about turning off taps while washing teeth, having baths instead of showers and only putting the 3Ps down the toilet. (If you're not sure what these are, just ask a child!)
We are also being assessed by someone from Thames Water who will be able to make suggestions about how we, as a school, can save water and money in school.
After an exciting assembly, the school council worked with Lydia and Paula to learn some water saving games. We played water saving Twister, water saving snakes and ladders, bingo and Top Trumps. These games are ours to keep and the school councillors will be out in the playground teaching the rest of the school and sharing the water saving tips.
A big thank you to Ali from Palm class whose Mum put us in touch with this exciting project.

E-Safety workshop 16th May
Wed 13 Apr 2016As you will know, the safety of your children whilst on the internet is of the upmost importance and something that we take extremely seriously at Elfrida school.
I was recently invited to an e safety presentation at another school and I was so shocked by what I learned that I booked the presenter on the spot to come into school to work with our children, the staff and YOU!
Internet safety and the issues related to this, are constantly changing and it is vital that we, as adults try to keep up to date, in order to protect our children as they develop their skills and independence in the on-line world.
However busy you are, whatever you normally do on a Monday morning, I urge you to save this date and attend the training, for the sake of your children. Every term, I meet with families who have had problems at home, with their children accessing inappropriate sites, or getting embroiled in cyber bullying. It is our joint responsibility to educate ourselves and our children about the dangers that they face and you can do this by taking the time out of your schedule, to attend on Monday, May 16th at 9am. Put it in your diaries now!
I look forward to seeing you all on the 16th May

Easter Bonnet Parade
Thu 24 Mar 2016On the last day of term Nursery, Reception and Year 1 got together for an Easter bonnet parade. The bonnets were truly fantastic and really showcased the children's creativity.
We saw a giant egg, some magnificent baskets and even a hat that lit up!
The parade was a great success even though the rain prevented us from having it outside.
Thank you to all the parents who came along to support and for joining in with traditional songs such as Chick Chick Chicken and Hot Cross Buns!
Thanks to Mrs Marshall for organising the prizes and to all the children for joining in and being creative!

Elfrida Supports Sport Relief
Fri 18 Mar 2016On Friday 18th March, Elfrida did their bit for Sports Relief! Many people dressed up as their favourite sports person and every class had a go at completing an exciting and challenging obstacle course. We saw ballerinas, Taekwondo stars, cheerleaders, footballers and rugby players to name a few!
Thank you to everyone who brought in their pound for dressing up, as a school we raised almost £300 for a very good cause. This could pay for 25 children to receive life saving vaccines in Africa.
Thank you for your generosity.

Meeting the Mayor
Fri 04 Mar 2016On Friday 4th Mayor, the Year 5 school councillors went with Miss Cartwright to meet the mayor of Lewisham. We were allowed to sit in the council chambers and we had to speak to 4 other Lewisham schools about what we would do if we were the Young Mayor for the day.
We then sat in the mayor's private parlour and we got to ask Steve Bullock some very difficult questions. We asked about the potential closure of Lewisham Hospital, how he would ensure green spaces for children with the new building works in Lewisham, and how he was going to help prevent crimes in Bellingham. Although he didn't really give us any straight answers we certainly made him think! We clearly have some politicians in the making!

Book Week
Fri 04 Mar 2016This week the whole school celebrated book week because it was World Book Day on March 3rd.
Lots of exciting events happened throughout the school. We had stories read to us in many different languages, lots of parents came in to read with children and make book marks to take away for immediate use and Snow White even came to visit Year 3!
We ended the week with dressing up and the school was a rainbow of colours as children celebrated classic stories like Alice in Wonderland and newer ones such as Horrid Henry.
Lots of fun was had by all, including the teachers, all of whom dressed up too. There were Tigers, princesses and even an Oompa Loompa. Ms Newton did assembly dressed as a giant Peach from the classic Roald Dahl book!
All classes took part in a competition to turn their book corners into something exciting. See some of them below.
Don't forget the reading challenge that Miss Cartwright set on Monday. Get your completed football pitches and sponsorship forms to the office by Friday 18th March. (Extra copies are available to download below too!) Click here

Elfrida Dance at Lewisham Live!
Thu 03 Mar 2016On 2nd March 2016 Mrs Lawson's dance group performed at Catford Theatre! They took part in an event with a lot of other Lewisham schools and really did themselves proud.
Their dancing and their behaviour was excellent and the show was fantastic. Many of the parents were in the audience and were part of the great cheer that went up as Elfrida finished their dance. The music got everyone clapping and a lot of fun was had by all. Thank you to Mrs Lawson for her hard work in preparing the dancers and for giving up her Wednesday evening for the performance!

More School Journey News!
Fri 22 Jan 2016A great day was had by all again at Arethusa! They were very brave and managed to complete lots of the high ropes challenges. The leap of faith was a challenge but the ultimate reward for those who completed it! Some real Robin Hoods shone at Archery and the target was hit many many times.
The evening disco was somewhat of a success but finished earlier than planned due to technical problems.
All the children have slept and are excited about more climbing and then swimming today before heading home.
We are looking forward to welcoming them back to school at approximately 2.30. See you then!
