Phonics

PHONICS

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. In Nursery we begin this process by learning the letter names and sounds. We do this through singing songs and taking part in fun games and activities based around letter sounds. The children then have access to independent learning based around sounds in the Nursery session.

We also focus on Phase 1 phonics which gives children the opportunity to investigate environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and voice sounds before moving onto oral blending and segmenting.

On this page there will be links to songs that we sing regularly so you can sing them at home together, activities and game ideas. Please do ask Nursery staff if you would like any further information.

We really like this song in Nursery at the moment!

We are thinking about the letter e this week.

For the past two weeks we have been learning letter c and letter k. They are different letter names, but they make the same sound! Even when you put the two letters together like this.... ck ...... they still make the same sound!

The letter sound for this week is......g!

What can you think of that begins with g? Can you write the letter g? it is difficult, but have a go!

We have been learning the letter sound d this week. We have used chalks to write it on the chalkboard, played matching games with the letters and used magnetic letters to explore the sound. What can you think of that begins with the letter d?

This week we are learning the letter m. We have been singing the letter m song and learning how to write it. We remember the rhyme 'down the Maisie, mountain, mountain'.

This week we are looking at the letter n. We are practising saying the letter sound and thinking of things that begin with the letter sound. We will be learning how to write the letter also!

This week we have been learning the sound for the letter i. We can write the letter i really well - both the capital letter and the lower case letter! Use the song and formation rhyme below to show your adults at home how great you are at the letter i.

This week we have been focusing on the letter P. We have leart the police, pin, pig, purple, popcorn, puppy, pirate all begin with the letter P. Try to practise the sound at home and then try to write the letter - remember 'down the plait and around the face' to help you!

This week are learning the letter sound t. We have sung lots of letter t songs, practised writing the letter shape and thought of lots of things beginning with the sound. Continue to practise this letter sound at home!

This week we are learning all about the letter A. You can sing the letter A songs below -  try and guess the object on one of the songs before the puzzle pieces all disappear.

Could you try to write the letter a in the air with your finger at home or on your way to school?

Come and show an adult in the Nursery.

This week we are learning all about the letter S. You can sing the letter S songs below.

Why don't you try to find things in your house or on the way to school that begin with the S sound?

Come and tell an adult in the Nursery.
