  • Year 5 parents - information about secondary schools for 2021

    Thu 25 Jun 2020

If you have a child going into Year 6 in September, you will need to apply for them to start secondary school in September 2021.

Lewisham Council have set up a mailing list for parents to receive up to date information about the application process, secondary school open days, advice and tips.  Sign up here for the secondary admissions mailing list

What you need to do now

Learn about as many schools as you can

Throughout September and October, secondary schools in Lewisham will be holding some form of open day sessions. Due to the current situation we are unable to confirm what format these will take, but this is your chance to meet staff and students and see what the schools have to offer.  In the meantime you can research all the schools you are interested in by visiting their websites.

Make a note of the deadline for applications

The deadline for applications is Saturday 31 October but we strongly recommend that you submit your application at least a week before the closing date.

    Check the admissions criteria

Most schools get more applications than there are places for children. When this happens, they will apply their admissions policy to decide which children qualify for a place. Make sure you read schools’ admissions criteria to see whether or not your child has a good chance of being offered a place. And please note: the criteria are not the same for every school.

    https://classroom.thenational.academy/assemblies/

Tomorrow (Thursday 18th June) the Duchess of Cambridge will lead an online assembly for the Oak National Academy during which she will speak about the importance of mental wellbeing among children. The theme of the Duchess’ assembly is ‘spread a little kindness’.  She will say: 'Talking to someone, whether it's a friend, family member, or teacher, is something you can do to make yourself feel that little bit better.

'And you can also play your part in helping others to feel better too, whether offering a friendly ear, or helping someone in need.

'Small acts of kindness can go such a long way. But as we help others, we mustn't forget to nurture ourselves, by taking the time to focus on the things that make us feel happy too.'

As part of the assembly, the Duchess also will join a video call with students from Waterloo Primary Academy in Blackpool, whose parents have been working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.

The assembly will be live on the Oak National Academy website at 11am on Thursday 18 June and can be accessed here:

A recording of the assembly will be available to view on the Oak National Academy website following the event.
