If you have any questions or queries in connection with the Reception classes here at Elfrida, then please do contact the school directly.

Primary applications are open and they are made online via the website address you can see below on the Lewisham leaflet. Nothing is decided directly by the school, you must apply to Lewisham Council. The closing date is the 15th January 2021.

                          The Early Years Curriculum

Within the Early Years, here at Elfrida we want the children to be happy, engaged, confident, independent, curious, resilient and creative learners!

The children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and they are encouraged to explore their own interests and take an independent approach to their learning within the 7 areas of development. They learn through play based activities alongside short directed teaching activities and group work.

The adults working with the children are frequently engaging in high quality interactions and constantly observe and assess each child to build up an individual profile of learning.

The outdoor area is just as important as the indoor area and the children have access to it on a daily basis, whatever the weather!

 Our Day

The Reception gate opens at 8.45am.

Children are met at the Reception outdoor area by their teacher.

Self register, phonics and child initiated learning indoors and outdoors.

Lunchtime for Reception is from 12pm-1.00pm.

Reception also have PE in the main hall on certain days.

Our day finishes at 3.15pm Monday to Thursday and 2.15pm on a Friday.

                Getting prepared for school!

  • Try to get your child into a good routine so that they can get up and be ready for school on time.
  • Speak to your child about what school will be like and show them pictures of the staff they will be with. Look at the website together so they can see the activities they might be doing. How does your child feel about starting school? Talk to them about anything that might be worrying them.
  • Read books about starting school.
  • Practise self help skills such as dressing, undressing, putting on their coats, hand washing and using cutlery.
  • Can they recognise their name?
  • Do some drawing and colouring activities to introduce your child to different mark marking tools.

Children should wear long or short grey  trousers or a skirt or pinafore with a white shirt or polo shirt.

They need to wear a burgundy jumper, cardigan or fleece.  When the weather is hot, children can also wear burgundy or red gingham dresses.

Please label everything with your child’s name!

We strongly recommend velcro fasteners not laces!

Reading in Reception

Reading is important to us all in the Early Years. We love books and we hope that the children will love reading books when they are in Reception too!

The children will practise phonics on a daily basis and will be taught the skills and processes needed to give them the confidence to be independent readers.

We have lots of different books for the children to read when they are in Reception - staged books, story books, information books, all types of books so that whatever your child is interested in they will find books linked to their interests!

Help your child love books by sharing stories with them at home and supporting them in learning letter sounds and practising blending sounds to read words!!

Some book suggestions to read before or whilst you are in Reception - there are lots more, these are just some of our favourites!

You can phone the school on 0208 698 5755 or email

We hope to meet you soon!
